14th Baltic Sea Summer School on Epilepsy - Sigulda

The annual Baltic Sea Summer Schools on Epilepsy (BSSSE) are clinically-oriented and focused on comprehensive aspects of diagnosis and treatment of epilepsy and provide a platform for transnational research. The open and informal atmosphere of the BSSSE allows easy communication between faculty and up to 40 international students.

The BSSSE are primarily addressed to medical postgraduates and junior researchers (age usually up to 40 years) with a special clinical or scientific interest in epilepsy. Applicants from the Baltic Sea region are given priority but participants from all parts of the world are accepted.

   

Preliminary programme
  • Introductory courses: EEG (children, adults), imaging pharmacology, seizure semiology
  • Tutorials: Diagnosis of seizures and epilepsy, System epilepsies, When and how to start treatment, Non-epileptic paroxysmal conditions, SUDEP, Presurgical evaluation, EEG in coma, Treatment of syndromes, Psychiatric and somatic comorbidities, Remission in epilepsy, Ethical aspects of epilepsy.
  • Lectures: Physiology of the immune system and mechanisms of autoimmunity, Autoimmune encephalitis, Neurocutaneous disorders and epilepsy, Principles of pharmacokinetic interactions of AEDs, Cannabinoids in epilepsy, Pharmacology of cannabinoids, Genetics of epilepsy, Headache and epilepsy, Function-structure relationships in autonomous seizure components, Neonatal seizures, Psychiatric aspects.
  • Study methods:Lectures, tutorials, case-oriented study, interactive group work with video, journal club. 

   

Research

Participants are requested to bring own cases and encouraged to present own research for peer discussion. Tutored small groups develop and present own research projects.
